Weighted decision matrix

List your options and criteria, set their importance, then score each option. Make your trade-offs easier to check.

JavaScript is needed to edit and calculate. The formula, limits and instructions remain available below.

Compare and check

  1. Name the options and criteria. Set each criterion’s direction and relative importance.
  2. Score every option from 1–5. Missing active scores pause the entire ranking.
  3. Inspect the ranking and expand each weighted breakdown. Editing weights or scores updates the results.
  4. To keep a draft, download a JSON file. Open it later and confirm replacement.

The formula

Benefit u = score − 1; cost u = 5 − score. Numerator N = Σ(weight × u), total weight W = Σ weight, and percentage score = 25 × N ÷ W. Zero weights do not contribute; a zero total cannot be ranked.

Ranking compares integer N. Ties keep the original option order with ranks such as 1, 1, 3. Displayed scores have two decimal places. This model organizes subjective trade-offs; it does not decide for you.

Data and limits

No accounts, uploads, analytics or autosave. After website assets load, scores and files are processed on your device. Clearing does not delete downloaded files. Switching language opens a separate page; download first to keep your work.

Up to 8 × 8 cells, 80 characters for the title and 40 for names. UTF-8 JSON files are limited to 65,536 bytes. Missing browser capabilities disable file actions while keeping the core comparison available.

Frequently asked questions

Must weights add up to 100?

No. Weights are divided by their total. Zero-weight criteria do not contribute.

How do I score costs?

Score the cost or burden: 1 low, 5 high. Calculation reverses this so lower is more favorable.

What if some scores are missing?

Any missing score for a positive-weight criterion hides all totals and ranks.

Is the top-ranked option always right for me?

The ranking follows your criteria, weights and scores. It organizes trade-offs and cannot replace your judgment about the situation.

Can I save and continue later?

Download a JSON comparison file, then open it later. This tool does not automatically save or sync.
